PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - As much as a foot of snow is forecast in parts of Rhode Island, and officials warn of difficult driving conditions and frigid temperatures overnight.

The National Weather Service said 8 to 12 inches of snow was expected to fall before the storm ends Wednesday. Snow began falling Tuesday afternoon, and the weather service said it could fall at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour into Tuesday night.

Schools in Providence, Warwick, Cranston and elsewhere will be closed Wednesday, and many communities issued parking bans.



Temperatures are expected to drop to around 9 degrees Tuesday night, with wind chills around minus-7.

Dozens of flights have been canceled at T.F. Green Airport.

Serve Rhode Island is seeking volunteers to shovel snow for elderly and disabled residents.
