CHICAGO (AP) - City of Chicago officials say the entire fleet of snow removal vehicles has been deployed after more than a half foot of snow fell overnight and into morning.

Officials with the Office of Emergency Management and Communications said in a statement Tuesday that about 300 vehicles went to work on side and residential streets after the snow stopped and main routes were cleared.

Officials say they’re focusing on residents’ safety, especially seniors and people with disabilities.

The National Weather Service says the Chicago suburb of Oak Park is among the hardest hit, logging more than 8 inches of snow. A half foot of snow was reported near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

City officials say six community centers are open to residents needing shelter during the day.
