ILION, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say the body of a 57-year-old man has been found inside his Mohawk Valley home after he set fire to the building during a standoff with police.
Police in the Herkimer County village of Ilion tell local media outlets that Gene Wedemeyer barricaded himself inside his home around 7 p.m. Monday after officers arrived to check out a report of a domestic dispute.
Police say he was armed with a machete and a knife and threatened to harm himself and others during the standoff.
Police negotiated with Wedemeyer, but officials say he threw two molotov cocktails at officers.
Officials say he started a fire in the attic around 2 a.m. Tuesday. His body was found on the first floor after firefighters doused the blaze.
There were no reports of anyone else injured.
