ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Josefa Velasquez, a reporter with experience working at the New York Capitol, has been hired by The Associated Press to help cover the legislature and state government.

Velasquez is a graduate of the University of Albany’s journalism program. She worked in the Capitol as a reporter for the Legislative Gazette, a publication operated by the SUNY system. She’ll join the AP’s veteran statehouse staff for 20 weeks to bolster coverage of this year’s legislative session and gain experience in accountability journalism.

Velasquez has written on legislative debate over the Dream Act and Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed Public Trust Act. She is bilingual in Spanish. Her temporary assignment with the AP begins Feb. 3.
