SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Northern Utah remains under a health alert from high soot counts.

Neighboring Salt Lake and Davis counties had the region’s heaviest concentration Monday of lung-busting particulate matter - 56 micrograms per cubic meter.

Cache County logged 45 micrograms. The federal standard is 35 micrograms.

No relief is in sight as a winter inversion traps tailpipe and other emissions in urban valleys.

Officials are banning wood-burning and urging people to drive less.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the Salt Lake region and parts of central California had the nation’s dirtiest air Wednesday.
