STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in North Carolina are investigating an early morning fire that took a woman’s life.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a 76-year-old woman died about 5 a.m. on Monday when a home burned west of Statesville.

Iredell County Fire Marshal Garland Cloer says the woman was found in her bedroom, underneath a pile of rubble from the collapse of the roof.

The woman’s name has not yet been released, pending notification of her family. Cloer says smoke detectors in the one-story brick home had been tested about two months ago and were working.
