DENVER (AP) - This week’s Bill To Watch in the Colorado Legislature
THE BILL:
Senate Bill 1, adding money to public colleges and universities.
WHAT IT DOES:
The bill adds $100 million to public college and universities and reduces the tuition rate hike cap from 9 percent a year to 6 percent a year.
WHO WANTS IT?
Democrats are touting this as a top priority. Gov. John Hickenlooper asked for it in this State Of The State address.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Just over $100 million. Of this amount, about $40 million is for various financial aid programs, and the remaining $60 million would go straight to the colleges and universities
WHERE IT STANDS:
The bill is up for its first hearing Thursday in the Senate Education Committee. The committee is controlled by Democrats, so its prospects are excellent.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:
“Please join me in supporting our request for an additional $100 million for higher education, which would cap tuition increases at 6 percent and put college within the reach of more families.” - Gov. John Hickenlooper, Jan. 9
