HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - A nearly $1.5 million renovation has been completed of the culinary arts lab at Careerline Tech Center in Holland.

The 6,000-square-foot lab renovation and addition of new equipment allow students to learn using commercial-grade equipment common in culinary colleges, according to The Holland Sentinel ( https://bit.ly/1gVDKyD ). The work started at the end of the 2012-13 school year.

A steam-convection oven, new fryer and two broiler ovens are among the additions to the kitchen. A demonstration lab includes video monitors, and six work areas with gas burners, griddle, gas grill, oven and sink.

“We’ve moved from a production kitchen to teaching kitchen,” Joe Carmolli, culinary and pastry arts iinstructor told the newspaper.

“It offers a much more hands-on approach to students. Before, we would have one grill, and I would demonstrate grilling, and we would have 24 students in the class, and not everyone would be able to grill. Now when I grill, there’s a demo grill and there are six other grills for students to go and practice.”

Enrollment in the program has grown to the point where the center has reached its capacity of 80 students, Carmolli said.

“Our Culinary and Pastry Art students are now working in a state-of-the-art, hands-on facility,” Dave Searles, tech center director, said in a news release. “We are now able to provide additional hands-on experiences for students giving them more opportunities to practice their newly learned skills.”
