NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A former sergeant with the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office has been sentenced to prison for accepting bribes.
The U.S. attorney’s office says 65-year-old Melvin Hike was sentenced Thursday to a 15-month prison term by a federal judge in Norfolk. He also was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and to serve three years of supervised release.
Hike pleaded guilty last October to conspiracy and federal programs bribery.
The charges stem from Hike’s arrangement with a bail bondsman. In return for cash payments and gifts, Hike steered prospective customers to the bail bondsman.
