PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix homeowner shot and killed an intruder in what police are calling an apparent case of self-defense.

Police say the 77-year-old homeowner woke up at about 3 a.m. Friday to discover an unknown man in the home.

The homeowner then grabbed his gun and shot the intruder who police have identified as 30-year-old William Thomas Mackey.

Police say it doesn’t appear that Mackey was armed when he was shot.

The homeowner’s name hasn’t been released.

Police say he told officers that someone also tried to burglarize his home on Thursday. Police say it’s unknown if Mackey was involved in that alleged incident.

They say the investigation is in its early stages, but that it appears the homeowner acted in self-defense.
