MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - The Medford City Council has asked the Police Advisory Committee for recommendations on how to deal with dangerous dogs and irresponsible dog owners.
The council took that action Thursday in a unanimous vote.
The Medford Mail Tribune reports (https://is.gd/tb6EWI ) that Mayor Gary Wheeler assured about 20 pit bull supporters in the audience that a breed-specific ban isn’t on the table.
However, Councilor John Michaels says he wants “all options left open.” In his words, “If there are issues with a breed, I want those put forward.”
And Councilor Tim Jackle said he had “no preconceived notion” of the outcome.
Medford police have recorded 89 attacks by dogs in three years. More than half of those were by pit bulls or pit bull mixes.
The Police Advisory Committee plans a public hearing. The council has asked for recommendations by April.
