BELLE CHASSE, La. (AP) - A Plaquemines Parish jury has found a 54-year-old Gretna man was guilty of fatally stabbing his girlfriend in Belle Chasse about one year ago.

The Time-Picayune reports (bit.ly/KnwQqs) John Edward Rivers Sr. was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing 44-year-old Wendy Osborn Lukes, also of Gretna.

The murder occurred on Jan. 8, 2013, in a remote location, where Rivers had taken his girlfriend, allegedly to have sex with her.

Prosecutors say the rendezvous soured, and an argument escalated, during which Lukes allegedly slapped Rivers. Rivers then stabbed her with a knife while they were sitting in his SUV.

A conviction of second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
