YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - A judge in Washtenaw County is hearing evidence to determine if there’s probable cause to send two young men to trial in the fatal shooting of an Eastern Michigan University football player.
Police say robbery was the motive in Demarius Reed’s Oct. 18 death at his Ypsilanti apartment building. Twenty-year-old Ed Thomas and 19-year-old Kristopher Pratt are charged with open murder.
Testimony Friday revealed Reed’s cellphone and wallet were missing when police arrived to investigate. Demarco Taylor testified he’d been with Pratt and Thomas on the night of the shooting, and he overheard Pratt say he had to shoot Reed because “it didn’t go as planned.”
Defense attorneys questioned witnesses’ credibility.
Reed was a 20-year-old wide receiver and communications major from Chicago.
The hearing is scheduled to continue Jan. 29.
