LOS ANGELES (AP) - A drunken driver who fatally struck former Australian rugby player Gary Mara in a California crosswalk has been sentenced to four years in state prison.
Prosecutors say 28-year-old Cara Cameron was sentenced Friday in Los Angeles. She pleaded guilty last month to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and agreed to pay $100,000 in restitution to Mara’s family.
Authorities say the 50-year-old Mara, his wife and 8-year-old daughter were vacationing in August 2012 when they entered a crosswalk in Santa Monica against a “don’t walk” signal.
Cameron, who has a history of drunken driving, struck Mara and he died at a hospital.
Mara played for the Balmain Tigers and the Parramatta Eels in the 1980s. He retired in 1985.
