GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Washington County residents will face fines beginning Monday if they fail to bag their trash before dropping it in curbside collection bins.

The Delta Democrat Times reports (https://bit.ly/1aw1rJr ) that the board of supervisors has given county solid waste enforcement officer Laur Reace Moore the authority to cite residents who dump loose trash in their bins.

Loose trash is considered litter, Moore said, and the fine will be $438.

Moore says has received complaints about careless trash disposal, which allows it to blow out and attract dogs.

Moore says she hopes that citing violators will encourage county residents to properly dispose of their trash.

She says a litter-free environment also helps with tourism and economic development and helps maintain property values.
