BRISTOL, Maine (AP) - The Coast Guard has ended its search in the waters off Bristol, Maine, after officials determined that a 911 call about a sinking boat was a hoax.

Petty Officer Matthew Couling said the search began Friday morning after a 911 call. A Coast Guard helicopter and vessels on the water launched a search.

Couling said the initial search revealed no debris indicating a vessel had gone down. And officials quickly began to question whether the call was a hoax.

The Maine Marine Patrol says investigators spoke to the man who made the 911 call and determined there was no sinking sailboat. The man could face charges.
