RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s transportation chief says work has been suspended on a new toll road that would run parallel to U.S. 460 from Suffolk to Petersburg.
Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne told the House Transportation Committee on Tuesday that no more money will be spent on the $1.4 billion, 55-mile highway until the state receives a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers. Even then, McAuliffe has said he plans to take a hard look to make sure the project is the best use of state dollars.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/1cjPfLx ) that the state has already spent nearly $200 million on design and related work on the project, even though the necessary permit has not been secured. The project was a top priority for former Gov. Bob McDonnell.
