SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Interstate 585 in Spartanburg has reopened after crews removed a bridge that was heavily damaged by a truck carrying construction equipment.
Crews worked around the clock to tear down the California Avenue bridge after a lift on the back of a flatbed truck slammed into the structure around 9 a.m. Monday. The highway reopened about 24 hours later.
The bridge was built in 1957 and was scheduled to be replaced starting in September. Authorities aren’t sure there is anything they can do to get the bridge rebuilt faster. Officials pointed out there are several alternate routes drivers can take.
The bridge had a clearance of 13 feet 10 inches, which was marked with several signs.
