RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) - A judge has ordered a Riverton man to pay a hefty fine for poaching an 18-point buck deer.

Investigators say 28-year-old Joseph A. Holdren didn’t have a general deer license when he shot the deer near the North Fork of the Popo Agie (poh-POH’-jah) River in October.

Holdren pleaded guilty in circuit court last month. Judge Robert Denhardt ordered him to pay $7,500 in fines and $4,000 in restitution.

The Riverton Ranger reports (https://bit.ly/1eGx1ZB ) the judge also revoked Holdren’s hunting privileges for 10 years and ordered him to turn over the .223-caliber AR-15-style rifle he used to kill the deer.

Authorities say Holdren left the meat to waste but they will try to make some kind of public use of the head, which had non-typical antlers measuring 31.5 inches across.
