SEATTLE (AP) - The Nature Conservancy in Washington has bought 2,300 acres of private timberland along the Queets River to enhance salmon habitat.

The group on Tuesday said the purchase from Rayonier protects valuable salmon runs and a rich forest ecosystem next to the Olympic National Park. It also ensures the land continues to operate as a forest.

The conservation group earlier bought about 3,500 acres of timberland from Plum Creek Timber Co. in the Manastash area west of Ellensburg. That land was transferred to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to be managed as part of the L.T. Murray Wildlife Area.
