Montgomery County officials say a 10-year-old boy is dead after he and two other boys fell through ice while playing on a sediment pond.

Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham said firefighters were called to the pond in Gaithersburg on Monday afternoon.

One of the boys, described as between 9 and 11 years old, had reached a relatively safe spot and Chief Graham said a second boy broke through the ice in a relatively shallow spot. But Chief Graham said the third boy might have been under water for as long as 30 minutes before he was found.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where Graham says he died Monday night. Authorities say the two surviving children appeared to be in good condition.
