OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A measure proposed in the state Legislature would make it a traffic infraction to smoke while in a car with minors.

Lawmakers in Olympia are hearing public testimony on Tuesday afternoon in the House Transportation Committee.

Under House Bill 2086, smokers who light up a cigarette, pipe or cigar in a moving or parked car with a minor inside could be subject to fines. The first violation would be a $125 penalty, and violations afterward would be $250.

The bill says the traffic infraction would not become part of the driver’s record or be available to insurance companies or employers.

KING-TV reports (https://is.gd/WfBiFK ) that a total ban on smoking in cars with minors has failed to pass in Washington before.
