THORNTON, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say a Thornton teenager will be prosecuted as an adult on a first-degree murder charge after another teen was stabbed to death.

Prosecutors identified the suspect Monday as 17-year-old Matthew James Trujillo.

He faces a charge of first-degree murder after deliberation in the Jan. 4 death of 18-year-old Anthony Benavidez.

The district attorney’s office did not know if Trujillo had an attorney. He was not listed on online jail records.

A news release did not say why Trujillo is being prosecuted as an adult. A spokeswoman for the DA’s office didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking an explanation.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 21.
