BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - Central Illinois election officials are working to encourage college students to register for the upcoming March primary election.

WJBC Radio reports (https://bit.ly/KUZwI3 ) the McLean County Clerk’s office is working with Illinois State University, hoping to get the word out to students and staff.

Turnout is typically low at precincts at the school’s Bone Student Center.

During a 2010 primary, just 35 voters came to the polls at the two precincts. That’s roughly a 9 percent turnout.

During a presidential year, lines can be out the door.

County Clerk Kathy Michael says students may not vote because they don’t feel they know enough about the issues in a non-presidential primary.

For the first time this year, some 17-year-olds can vote in the primary if they turn 18 before the November election.
