KENTWOOD, La. (AP) - The Kentwood Town Council has appointed former Police Chief Sammy Broyles as interim chief until an election is held in November.
The town’s previous chief, Gregory Newton, was removed from office in January after pleading guilty to a charge of malfeasance in office. State police arrested Newton in early 2013 after $2,000 went missing from $11,000 in stolen money that had been recovered in Pike County, Miss.
Newton was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay a $2,500 fine.
The Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/1nmTfRO ) the council agreed Thursday to appoint Broyles to the post.
