MONROE, N.C. (AP) - Law enforcement officials say a Monroe man is facing numerous charges after a fatal shooting and a four-car collision with a 4-month-old infant in the suspect’s backseat.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says charges against 22-year-old Christopher Jermareus Thomas include first-degree murder and misdemeanor child abuse.

Interim Monroe police chief Bryan Gilliard said Thomas got into an argument with the victim in a gas station parking lot. Gillard said Necole DeMont Horn was shot before Thomas led officers on a chase down U.S. 74.

Gillard said when officers caught up with Thomas, he had been in a wreck with three other cars. The 4-month-old was unrestrained in the backseat but unhurt.

Thomas is being held without bond in the county jail and was scheduled to go to court on Saturday.
