SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - Morningside College in Sioux City says it is on track to have construction of two new buildings and renovations to its library completed by fall as part of its $13 million Academic Village project.
“There’s momentum here,” Morningside President John Reynders told the Sioux City Journal (https://bit.ly/1gXiUTy ). “Alumni feel good about the place because they see the changes. More and more people are applying. Colleges get on a roll. And we’re very fortunate now that this college is on a roll.”
The Academic Village project includes construction of a new classroom building and academic advising center, and remodeling of the Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center, which houses the private college’s library. The project is part of Morningside’s $50 million “Vision 2020: Transformation II” campaign.
The three-story classroom building will have offices, classrooms and laboratories for the college’s nursing and education departments and for a new applied agriculture and food studies program. The new advising center will be next door and connected to the classroom building by a second-floor skywalk.
Reynders said the classroom building is crucial because more space is needed for growing nursing and education programs. The building - the first new academic building on campus since 1974 - will feature three simulation rooms with robotic patients for nursing students.
It will also house the new agriculture studies program.
“There’s such a demand for people to go to work in the food and agriculture industries,” Reynders said. “So we think that’s going to be a very big part of what we do.”
Construction is expected to be complete by Oct. 1.
