City of Ypsilanti boosts fines for illegal dumping

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - The city of Ypsilanti is boosting fines for illegal dumping as part of an effort to curb recurring problems.

The Ann Arbor News reports (https://bit.ly/1lFxeSx ) that the Ypsilanti City Council this week approved the increase in fines. The amounts are now set at $2,500 for the first offense for dumping. For subsequent offenses, the fines could go up to $5,000.

The city previously charged $50 for the first violation, $150 for the second and $225 for the third.

City Attorney John Barr said the new fines mirror those of nearby Ypsilanti Township and the state of Michigan.

On Monday, Ypsilanti police responded to a call in Peninsular Park on Monday for someone who dumped multiple old tires. The person fled.
