COLUMBIANA, Ala. (AP) - A man is jailed in Alabama in the 1986 slaying of a woman in Florida.
Police say 57-year-old Stephen Manning Lamont of Montevallo is charged in the killing of Janet L. Staschak in Clearwater, Fla.
Lamont was arrested on a murder charge this week and is jailed in Shelby County, near Birmingham.
Court records don’t show whether he has a lawyer.
A statement from Clearwater police says officers began looking at the 27-year-old case and found a DNA sample that matched Lamont, who had served time in Alabama for robbery.
Lamont escaped from Holman Prison in Atmore with four other inmates in 1986, the year of the slaying.
Police say Lamont told investigators he killed the woman after initially claiming he never met her.
Staschak was strangled and sexually assaulted.
