SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois residents are digging out from another thick blanket of snow and bracing for the return of sub-zero temperatures.
The National Weather Service says 7 inches of snow fell at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport as of noon on Wednesday, with about 5 to almost 8 inches falling in the suburbs.
The blast in northern Illinois followed heavy snows in central Illinois that dropped 8 inches just west of Springfield overnight. Meanwhile, parts of southern Illinois got an inch or two.
Forecasters say the snow will be followed by bitter temperatures, with lows of about 5 below zero in northern Illinois to minus 7 in central Illinois. Wind chills could make temperatures feel as cold as 20 below in some areas.
Thursday’s highs are expected to be in the single digits.
