CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire lawmakers are considering whether to prohibit colleges and universities from asking students for the passwords to their social media accounts.

A Senate committee is holding a public hearing Tuesday on a bill that would prevent colleges from asking students or prospective students for access to their accounts. Students also couldn’t be forced or asked to add anyone to their list of contacts associated with a personal social media account - in other words, they couldn’t be forced to “friend” someone on Facebook.

The National Council on State Legislatures says nine states have passed similar laws in recent years, and nine more, including New Hampshire, are currently considering measures. Other states have passed similar laws regarding employers.
