BETHEL, Alaska (AP) - The Bethel City Council made no decision about hiring an investigator to examine city contracts following a two-and-a-half hour meeting Saturday.

KYUK reports (https://is.gd/EJzHVr) members have not said publicly which contracts or personnel issues warrant investigation. The agenda item noted members could discuss matters that could have an adverse effect on city finances related to contracts and personnel management.

Councilmember Heather Pike says it’s difficult to pretend like everything is fine. She says she’d be in favor of spending $50,000 on an investigator based on what she’s seen.

The city attorney has contacted two possible investigators.

City Manager Lee Foley reminded the council of a looming $1 million budget shortfall. He says members should think seriously about spending money for a private investigator when he’s facing laying off city workers.
