SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The 911 emergency system in Salt Lake Valley is coming under scrutiny after the death of a heart attack victim.

The Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/1bjLLJO ) reports a Draper man called 911 to report he was having a heart attack, but his call was routed to Salt Lake City’s dispatch instead of service near his home.

Some officials say the incident illustrates the need for a unified emergency system throughout the region.

Officials say cellphone calls to 911 are connected to the nearest cell tower.

Areas surrounding Sandy are routed from a Sandy tower, and that community is connected to Salt Lake City’s 911 system.

The other system is operated by the Valley Emergency Communications Center, which covers all the other cities in the county, and unincorporated areas.
