NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Newport News officials have condemned a three-story building that collapsed over the weekend.

City fire department Battalion Chief Steve Pincus says investigators believe rain and the weight of snow were contributing factors. But the cause of the collapse hasn’t been determined.

The building collapsed around 8 p.m. Saturday in a block behind Newport News City Hall.

Pincus says the roof collapsed onto the third floor, which fell onto the second floor. The front wall then fell into a parking area in front of the building.

Pincus says the building is a total loss and likely will be demolished.
