WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities have called off a search of the Cape Fear River after getting a distress call but finding no one.

New Hanover County Fire Battalion Chief Michael Pinson says someone called 911 at around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday and reported that he heard someone shouting and in distress.

Officials set up a command post and dispatched boats and helicopters to search the area. Pinson says rescuers heard the shouting also but called off their search after an hour and a half.

Authorities say the distress call may have come from someone who was already on a boat that subsequently left the area.
