PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - After a decade of debate, construction has formally begun for a new jail in Jackson County.

WLOX-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1jDSh3T ) the $27.5 million jail should be ready to open in summer 2015.

The existing jail was built in 1979 and houses more than 400 inmates.



Work began on the new facility Thursday. It will hold up to 750 inmates with room to expand for an additional 60 beds.
