CHENEY, Wash. (AP) - The fugitive sex offender from Denver who was reportedly sighted in Cheney was taken into custody Friday in Norfolk, Va.

The U.S. Marshals Service says 51-year-old Eric Hartwell was captured at a motel. He refused to surrender and officers broke down a door to arrest him.

Eastern Washington University sent a text alert to students Thursday after Hartwell reportedly was seen in town and on campus.

Hartwell had cut off his monitoring bracelet and walked away last Friday from a Denver halfway house where he was serving a three-year sentence for refusing to register as a sex offender.

He has sex offense convictions in Washington and also cut off a GPS bracelet in 2009 in Washington.
