RENO, Nev. (AP) - Residents within Washoe County’s Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District will be allowed to burn yard debris for a one-week period in early March.

Permits are required and will be available Saturday at Truckee Meadows fire stations.

Burning will be allowed through Sunday March 9, though residents must call a special number beforehand to verify that weather conditions allow burning on a particular day. The number is on the permit.

It’s permissible to burn common yard debris such as leaves, twigs and weeds. Burn piles must be extinguished by 2 p.m. each day. Use of a barrel or burning household trash is prohibited.

Residents are advised to use caution and pay attention to winds.

Fire officials say the weeklong burn period may be the only one this season.
