SULLIVAN, Ind. (AP) - Officials say most of the dozens of people forced by fire from a southwestern Indiana apartment tower found other places to stay.

Authorities say one person was killed and 18 suffered smoke inhalation and other injuries from Thursday’s fire at Sunrise Towers in the city of Sullivan. Most residents of the seven-story tower are senior citizens or those with disabilities.

Sullivan Fire Chief Rob Robertson says the blaze was mostly contained to one fifth-floor room, but other floors had smoke or water damage. Residents were evacuated from about 90 rooms.

The Sullivan Daily Times reports many residents left with few belongings and without medications.

Matt Cress of the Salvation Army tells the Tribune-Star only a few residents were staying overnight at its shelter as most were with relatives.
