HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The U.S. Education Department says Christian County Public Schools has agreed to take corrective steps after an investigation found most violations of the district’s disciplinary code were open to interpretation and that black students were being referred for discipline disproportionately to white students.
The department said Friday its Office for Civil Rights reviewed disciplinary actions for four school years, from 2008 to 2012.
School board attorney Jack Lackey of Hopkinsville says officials have been told there was not a specific complaint that prompted the investigation.
School Superintendent Mary Ann Gemmill (GHEM’-il) says a lot of work went into the agreement and officials believe the district has already improved. Lackey and Gemmill say the district is emphasizing efforts to address issues before they become problems to lessen the need for disciplinary action.
