FREEPORT, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say as many as 12 dogs were found dead after firefighters put out a massive blaze that engulfed a one-car garage on Long Island.
Freeport Fire Department Executive Director Ray Maguire says Friday firefighters discovered between 10 and 12 dead dog bodies, including some that appeared to be puppies, after puting out the blaze Thursday afternoon.
Animal control officers rescued two dogs found in front of the garage.
Maguire says multiple agencies are investigating and the fire site is now a crime scene. He says the dogs may have been pit bulls.
The home’s co-owner tells Newsday (https://bit.ly/1kyLgRR ) the house is supposed to be unoccupied. Fernando Cruz says he now lives in Texas.
Authorities are investigating whether the garage was possibly used for breeding or dog fighting.
