LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Great Lakes Commission say $75,000 in grants is available for monitoring and cleanup of streams and rivers.
A total of $50,000 is available through the Michigan Clean Water Corps, a network of volunteer monitoring programs that assist the DEQ.
The grants help newly formed groups design plans for studying the waterways’ habitat characteristics and the presence of insects and other aquatic organisms near or on the river bottoms. Local governments and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply.
Additionally, $25,000 is available through a different program that supports volunteer river, stream and creek cleanups. A 25 percent minimum local match is required.
The cleanup program is funded by fees from the sale of Michigan’s water quality protection license plates.
