NEW ELLENTON, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Military Department and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site have signed an agreement outlining use of land and unused buildings at the location.
Maj. Gen. Robert Livingston, South Carolina’s adjutant general and head of the state’s Army and Air National Guard, signed the agreement Thursday with operations manager David Moody.
Col. Brad Owens, the Guard’s deputy chief of staff for operations and training, says the site offers training opportunities for the Guard’s weekend and annual training events.
The sprawling complex covers 198,000 acres, much of it forested, across several counties along the Savannah River.
The 310-square-mile site once produced plutonium and tritium for atomic bombs. Work there is now focused mostly on research and cleaning up areas of the site contaminated during weapons production.
