DETROIT (AP) - Police say a 36-year-old man whose van ran out of gas was fatally struck by a tow truck on a Detroit freeway while attempting to put fuel in the vehicle.

State police said in a statement that Reginald Wyatt of Detroit was pronounced dead at a hospital after being struck about 2:25 a.m. Thursday along a westbound Interstate 96 exit ramp. Police say Wyatt was driving when the van ran out of gas.

The van was partially blocking a portion of the ramp when it stopped. Police say Wyatt was standing in the lane for traffic when he was stuck.

The tow truck driver wasn’t injured. The death is under investigation.
