VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - Clark County and its jail medical provider have agreed to pay $700,000 to the parents of a man who was killed two years ago in custody.

The Columbian reports (https://bit.ly/1epOxSS ) the settlement reached last week resolves a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by the parents of a mentally ill Vancouver man, Marius C. Asanachescu.

The 28-year-old was jailed in February 2012 for assaulting his brother and was awaiting transfer to Western State Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Corrections officers were trying to stop the 300-pound man from hitting his head on the floor when he suffocated. The medical examiner ruled the death was an accident.

His parents told The Columbian he had bipolar disorder.
