WESTVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Purdue University is merging the administration of its two regional campuses in northwestern Indiana.
Officials say Purdue North Central in Westville and Purdue Calumet in Hammond that are about 35 miles apart will both remain open.
The Post-Tribune of Merrillville and The Times of Munster report the two campus chancellors said Wednesday no immediate changes are planned but they’ll work to combine administrative and academic oversight functions into one central office.
About 9,500 now attend the campus in Hammond. The Westville campus has about 5,500 students
The merger follows directives by Purdue’s Board of Trustees and university President Mitch Daniels to cut administrative costs in order to increase affordability for students.
North Central chancellor James Dworkin says the merger probably will take about two years to complete.
