SULLIVAN, Ind. (AP) - A fire broke out at a southwestern Indiana apartment building on Thursday, killing one person and injuring 18 others.
The victim died from smoke inhalation at Sunrise Towers, just north of downtown Sullivan, Fire Chief Rob Robertson said. The name of the victim was not immediately released.
Sullivan County Community Hospital treated 18 people for injuries including smoke inhalation, according to the nursing supervisor.
The fire began shortly after noon on the fifth floor of the seven-story building. The building was evacuated, with residents going to a nearby apartment complex and gymnasiums at nearby schools. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
The Terre Haute Tribune-Star reported that tenants of the building, operated by the Sullivan Housing Authority, are mostly senior citizens and people with disabilities.
Sullivan is about 80 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
