ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - A St. Johnsbury man who was shot by a Vermont state trooper during a standoff on a school bus has pleaded guilty to assault and other charges.
William Mahoney, 37, was shot in the hip in September 2012 after hiding in the bus in Danville and broadcasting threats on a school radio. According to court documents, he charged at the trooper while pretending to pull a handgun from a holster. The attorney general’s office later ruled that the officer’s use of deadly force was justified.
The Caledonian Record (https://bit.ly/1cmtyMd) reports that Mahoney pleaded guilty Monday to simple assault, trespassing, leaving the scene of an accident, negligent operation and driving with a suspended license.
He was sentenced to at least two years in prison, with a maximum sentence of life. The sentence will run concurrently with the one- to four-year sentence he already is serving for an escape committed in 2010.
“With a life sentence hanging over his head indefinitely, this should deter Mr. Mahoney from engaging in any further criminal conduct,” said Caledonia County State’s Attorney Lisa Warren.
