SANTEE, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina troopers say they have taken a Virginia man into custody after finding his mother in the trunk of his car at a rest area on Interstate 95.
The Highway Patrol said its officers were looking for a Cadillac after being told it was involved in a kidnapping in Richmond, Va.
Troopers spotted the car in a rest area near Santee around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and took 20-year-old Regelio Lopez into custody. The mother was found in the trunk, and authorities say she did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.
Orangeburg County deputies say Lopez is being held in their jail. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
