SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) - Police say two students who triggered a door alarm prompted a 90-minute lockdown at Smithfield High School and a police response that scared students and parents.
The lockdown began at about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday after a school employee heard the door alarm and saw someone wearing a backpack enter the building. The employee told school officials, who ordered the lockdown and called police.
Students say police officers had their guns drawn as they responded to the building.
Police searched the school and deemed it safe. Authorities said later that the alarm went off when a student opened a locked door for another student to enter the building.
It’s not clear if the two students are facing discipline.
